Punjab Government Overhauls Sahiwal Division Local Government Structure

SAHIWAL – In a landmark administrative shift, the Punjab Local Government Department has officially notified a new local government structure for the Sahiwal Division. The restructuring includes a massive expansion of the Sahiwal Municipal Corporation and the Chichawatni Municipal Committee, effectively redrawing the urban landscape of the region.

Director of Local Government Sahiwal, Shahid Farooq Warraich, stated that this historic decision was driven by the special efforts of Commissioner Sahiwal Division, Dr. Asif Tufail. The primary goal is to extend modern urban facilities to citizens living on the outskirts of the city.

Sahiwal Municipal Corporation: Population and Union Councils Double

The new notification transforms Sahiwal Municipal Corporation into a significantly larger urban entity.

  • Population Surge: The corporation’s jurisdiction now covers 616,000 people, up from the previous 291,000.

  • Union Councils (UCs): The number of UCs has more than doubled, increasing from 12 to 29.

  • Rural Integration: A total of 24 rural villages (Chaks) have been merged into the city limits, including prominent areas such as 85/6R, 86/6R, 90/9L, 135/9L, 99/9L, and 96/6R.

Establishment of New Municipal Committees

To streamline administrative affairs and improve service delivery, four key areas have been elevated to the status of Municipal Committees:

  1. Harappa: Includes Harappa City, Jinnah Town, and adjacent villages like 1/10L.

  2. Kameer: Comprises 120/9L Kameer and six surrounding villages.

  3. Kassowal: Includes Chak No. 118/12L, 4/14L, and 117/12L.

  4. Noor Shah: Encompasses Chak No. 50GD, 49GD, Karyal, and Lunganwali.

Administrative Overhaul: Dissolution of District Council

In a major structural change, the Punjab government has dissolved the Sahiwal District Council, splitting its functions into two distinct Tehsil Councils:

Tehsil CouncilNumber of Union Councils
Tehsil Council Sahiwal52
Tehsil Council Chichawatni54

Additionally, the Chichawatni Municipal Committee has been expanded to include Chak No. 40/12L, 109/12L, and 39/12L.

“This expansion of urban limits fulfills a long-standing demand of the public. It ensures that issues regarding roads, sanitation, and drainage in suburban areas will now be addressed on a priority basis.”
