International Albinism Awareness Day: Sahiwal Division Delegation Meets UN Officials

SAHIWAL (Web Desk) – In observance of International Albinism Awareness Day, various seminars and awareness activities were organized across Pakistan, aligning with global events. This day was established by the United Nations in 2014 to safeguard the rights of individuals with this hereditary condition and to foster public understanding.
Marking the occasion, a high-level delegation from the Pakistan Albinism Society (Sahiwal Division) held a crucial consultative meeting with Ms. Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond, the UN Independent Expert on Albinism, and Mr. Abou Jeng, Human Rights Officer. The delegation was led by community representative Syed Ali Tahir, alongside members Syed Zeeshan Haider, Syed Murtaza, and Syed Mukarram Raza.
Comprehensive Policy Document Presented
During the meeting, the delegation presented a comprehensive policy document outlining the social, educational, medical, and economic challenges faced by the albinism community in Pakistan. Speaking on the occasion, the delegation leaders emphasized the urgency of institutional support:
“Due to widespread misconceptions and a lack of public awareness, individuals with albinism routinely face severe discrimination. Implementing robust legal and social frameworks is imperative to counter this prejudice and ensure their integration into mainstream society.”
Key Recommendations and Demands
The policy document submitted to the UN officials highlighted several critical demands aimed at both local and international authorities:
Tax Exemptions on Medical Supplies: A call for tax reductions on essential protective goods, including high-SPF sunscreens, specialized visual aids, and other skin-protection apparel.
Educational and Economic Inclusion: Provisions for specialized facilities for students with albinism in educational institutes, alongside equal employment opportunities in the job market.
Legal Protection: Enforcement of strict legal actions against the targeted exploitation and systematic discrimination of the community.
Climate Change Integration: Recognizing their vulnerability to extreme heatwaves, the delegation urged the inclusion of the albinism community into national climate change and disaster management policies.
International Travel Facilitation: Relaxation of travel restrictions and immigration processes on medical and humanitarian grounds for international transit.
United Nations Assures Support
Ms. Muluka-Anne Miti-Drummond commended the Sahiwal delegation for their proactive efforts and termed the recommendations highly pertinent. She assured the delegation that she would raise these critical issues at both national and international forums to effectively protect the rights, dignity, and safety of persons with albinism worldwide.
