Artistic Relief: Sahiwal Arts Council Hosts Special Workshop for Prison Officers

SAHIWAL (News Reporter): In a unique fusion of law enforcement and fine arts, the Sahiwal Arts Council recently organized a specialized training workshop for under-training officers of the Punjab Prison Staff Training College. The initiative aimed to provide mental relief and foster emotional intelligence among officers working in the high-stress environment of the correctional system.
Enhancing Mental Health and Professional Conduct
Addressing the trainees, Malik Shaukat Feroze Awan, Commandant of the Punjab Prison Staff Training College, highlighted the critical need for psychological well-being in the force. His address focused on several key areas:
High-Pressure Environment: The demanding nature of prison duty can often lead to severe psychological strain and burnout.
Behavioral Shifts: Prolonged exposure to stress can breed bitterness or aggressive tendencies, which negatively impact service delivery and the department’s public image.
Art as a Necessity: Engagement with fine arts is not merely a hobby but a vital tool for maintaining mental equilibrium and nurturing empathy.
“When an officer is mentally at peace and appreciates the beauty of art, they are better equipped to treat prisoners and the public with dignity. This, in turn, rehabilitates the department’s image,” remarked Malik Shaukat Feroze Awan.
Cultural Policy and Expert Participation
Dr. Riaz Hamdani, Director of the Arts Council, stated that fostering inter-departmental collaboration is a top priority for the council. He reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the Punjab Government’s cultural policies at the grassroots level.
The workshop featured sessions led by prominent figures in the art world:
Abdul Mateen: The renowned calligrapher shared insights into the intricate secrets of Islamic calligraphy.
Munawar Hussain Advocate: Discussed the intersection of artistic expression and legal frameworks.
Raza: Led technical discussions on the various nuances of visual arts.
A Positive Reception
The workshop concluded with a vibrant dialogue between the trainee officers and young local artists. The officers praised the creative atmosphere, describing it as an excellent “stress-buster.” Experts believe that such initiatives are essential for inducing positive behavioral changes, ensuring that those in uniform maintain a humane and balanced approach throughout their professional careers.
