Exploring the Americas: A Guide to the 35 Countries of the Western Hemisphere

The Americas represent a vast and diverse landmass stretching from the Arctic in the north to the sub-Antarctic reaches of the south. Often discussed as a single “continent” in many cultures, the region is geographically divided into three distinct sub-regions: North America, Central America, and South America.
In total, the Americas are home to 35 independent countries and numerous territories.
1. North America (23 Countries)
While many associate North America only with its largest nations, it is a massive region that includes the mainland and the island nations of the Caribbean. Geopolitically, Central America is also considered part of the North American continent.
Mainland Giants: Canada, United States, Mexico.
The Caribbean Nations: Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago.
Central American Strip: Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama.
2. Central America
Central America serves as the land bridge connecting the two great northern and southern masses. While it is part of the North American continent, it is culturally and geographically distinct. It consists of seven countries:
Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.
3. South America (12 Countries)
South America is known for its incredible biodiversity, the Amazon Rainforest, and the Andes Mountains. It comprises 12 sovereign states:

Dependencies and Overseas Territories
In addition to the 35 sovereign nations, several territories remain under the administration of other countries. These regions are integral to the geography of the Americas but are not independent states:
Greenland: An autonomous territory of Denmark.
Puerto Rico: A commonwealth territory of the United States.
Bermuda & Falkland Islands: British Overseas Territories.
French Guiana: An overseas department of France.
Other Islands: Includes various territories like the US Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, and Aruba.
