Hike in Petroleum Prices: Deputy Commissioner Sahiwal Holds Meeting with Transporters

SAHIWAL (News Reporter) Deputy Commissioner Sahiwal, Captain (R) Samiullah Farooq, stated that the recent surge in petroleum prices is a direct consequence of global dynamics—specifically the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—and noted that the government has no direct hand in these international fluctuations.
He shared these views while presiding over a high-level meeting with a representative delegation from the Transport Association. The session was attended by DPO Sahiwal Muhammad Usman Tippu, Secretary RTA Wasif Yasin, traffic police officials, and a large number of transporters.
Key Highlights of the Meeting
Balanced Fare Adjustments: The Deputy Commissioner clarified that while a reasonable adjustment in fares is a legitimate right of transporters following fuel hikes, unauthorized or exorbitant increases will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Government Policy: He emphasized that the government aims to protect the public interest and does not wish to shift the entire burden of global price hikes onto the transporters or the masses.
Austerity Measures: DC Sahiwal stressed the importance of the government’s austerity policy, noting that all sectors of society must fulfill their responsibilities to navigate current economic challenges.
Transporters’ Cooperation and Demands
During the session, the transporters assured the district administration of their full cooperation. They also took the opportunity to highlight various challenges currently facing the transport sector. In response, the Deputy Commissioner assured them that their legitimate grievances would be addressed on a priority basis.
Administrative Commitment
“Providing relief to the public is our top priority. We will work alongside transporters to establish fare rates that are fair and acceptable to both the passengers and the transport owners.”
