Police Arrest Five for Underage Marriage in Sahiwal

SAHIWAL – The Kameer Police have launched a crackdown against child marriage, arresting five individuals—including the groom and the bride’s father—for the illegal marriage of a 12-year-old girl.

According to police reports, the incident came to light following a dispute between a local woman, Sonia Bibi, and her husband, Shan Raza. Sonia had been living with her sister due to domestic issues, while her 12-year-old daughter, Iram, remained in the custody of her father.

The Illegal Union

Police officials stated that Shan Raza arranged the marriage of his underage daughter to 28-year-old Mohsin, son of Zafar Iqbal. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided the ceremony and apprehended five suspects on the spot, including:

  • Mohsin (The Groom)

  • Shan Raza (The Father)

  • Tanveer and Naeem (Witnesses/Accomplices)

While five were taken into custody, the Nikah Registrar (Nikah Khwan), identified as Maulvi Muhammad Yasin, along with six male guests and three women, managed to flee the scene before the police arrived.

Legal Action

A case has been registered at the Kameer Police Station on the complaint of the girl’s mother, Sonia Bibi. The suspects are being charged under Sections 4, 5, and 6 of The Child Marriage Restraint Act 1929.

“The protection of minors is our utmost priority,” a police spokesperson remarked. “We are conducting further raids to apprehend the Nikah Khwan and the remaining suspects who fled the scene.”

Police have initiated a formal investigation into the matter to ensure all parties involved in facilitating the marriage are brought to justice.
