Justice Delayed: Prime Suspects Still at Large in Sahiwal MPhil Student Murder Case

CHICHAWATNI – More than seven months after the brutal killing of an MPhil student near Adda Kassowal, the primary suspects remain evading arrest, despite a high-profile investigation that has already led to the demotion of a local police official.
The victim, Atteqa Mazhar, was shot dead inside her home in Village 1-14L on the night of August 14, 2025. Investigations reveal the attack was carried out by her cousin, Ali Raza (also known as Muddasir), and five accomplices after Atteqa reportedly rejected a marriage proposal.
A Web of Deception and Community Pressure
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the case was shrouded in silence. Under intense pressure from the local community and influential figures, the victim’s parents were allegedly coerced into declaring the murder a suicide.
The cover-up extended to the local precinct. Following a departmental inquiry, Zeeshan Bashir, the then-SHO of Kassowal Police Station, was removed from his post and demoted from Sub-Inspector to Assistant Sub-Inspector. He stands accused of professional negligence and attempting to officially categorize the homicide as a self-inflicted death.
The Courage of a Sister
The breakthrough in the case is credited to the extraordinary bravery of the victim’s 17-year-old sister, Hooria Hijab. Defying both family pressure and social taboos, Hooria fought for 75 days to bring the truth to light. Her persistence eventually led her to the courts, which subsequently ordered the Kassowal Police to register a formal murder case.
Due to the sensitive nature of the case and potential threats, the district administration has provided Hooria with full police security.
Investigation Status and Police Action
District Police Officer (DPO) Usman Tipu confirmed that while two suspects, Adeel and Ishtiaq, are currently in custody, the “prime targets” remain at large.

“Raids are ongoing across the region to apprehend the remaining fugitives,” stated DPO Tipu. “We are committed to ensuring that justice is served for Atteqa Mazhar.”

In a bid to restore public confidence and accelerate the probe, Hassan Mumtaz Gujjar has been appointed as the new SHO of Kassowal Police Station. He has officially assumed his responsibilities and is tasked with overseeing the hunt for the fleeing suspects.
